Pengabdi Setan Movie Review
Pengabdi Setan as in Slaves of the Satan is one of the best horror movies on my watch list. A quick trivia, this movie is one of the best selling horror movie in Indonesia. Below is the small detail of the insight from the movie. SPOILER AHEAD.
The story spins around a mother and also a once famous singer who's been terminally ill for 3 years and the family which struggles to make ends meet for their mother's medical fees. The main cast is Rini, the elder sister, Tony, the 2nd eldest brother followed by Bondi and Ian and their Father another grandmother.
The mother keeps being scared of an unseen being and Rini suffers from nightmares. One night, Rini goes to check on her mother only to find her standing and suddenly falling into her hands and dying. The burial is carried out in the village cemetery where Rini is approached by the Ustaz's son, Hendra.
Then after they start to be approached their mother's ghost one by one leaving them scared to the core. Not soon after their grandmother passes away by falling into the well. Rini finds her grandmother's letter and with Hendra's help bring it to the original recipient. The recipient is her grandmother's old schoolmate and close friend and also an author of the supernatural.
With the help of his published novel, Rini and Tony find out that their mother might have been in a cult which helps the fertility. They also uncover the truth that they might have been conceived by men from the cult and the last child, Ian will be taken from the family when he turns seven years old by zombies.
With their Father's absence in the household, the kids are constantly attacked by ghostly appearances which causes them to flee their house to the aid of the Ustaz and Hendra. When Hendra leaves to collect more information from Rini's grandmother's friend, he is attacked by a stranger while on the way back. He dies from the accident and Rini finds a letter fallen from his body when they carry his body back home. They are soon after brought back to house by their Father and it seems all better now with then planning and packing to move downtown.
As waiting for the driver takes almost the whole day and comes nightfall. The family and the Ustaz are attacked by zombies and ghostly appearances with the death of Ustaz , the Father calls of the people from the cult. Rini also finds out from the letter that Ian is to be taken because he's the son of the devil himself. With the aid of their grandmother's school friend, they flee their house.
They now lead a somewhat happier life in a small downtown apartment and receives food from a neighbour next door. Unknowingly the couple from next door are also a part of the cult and just pampering them for the next harvest.
